Merrimack Firefighters 5K

The Merrimack Firefighters 5K is a flat and fast race in Merrimack, NH.

(I know what youre thinking. Flat and Fast? Every 5K is described as flat and fasteven if its got a bunch of hills! But last year I ran my fastest 5K in years here, so my legs are quite sure the course is flat and fast! :-)

Come! Run with me now…

Mystic Marauders Triathlon

The Mysic Marauders Triathlon is an unofficial Tri that marks the end of the season for the Mystic Marauders. The “MM”s swim at a lake north of Boston from late April to early October, and compete in triathlons wearing the colors of the Wheelworks Multisport Team.

Of course, October in New England brings cold temps to the lakes, so the Marauders are wearing wetsuits…but I swim with no wetsuit, beceause I carry the gene of an ancester who had antifreeze in his veins.

Come! Swim with me now…

(I took this photo, and the others below, while swimming.)

Ten years after

How was your weekend? I hope you enjoyed it.

But I know that no one could “enjoy” the tenth anniversary of a horrible day.

Yesterday I woke up at dawn, planning to swim and run and feel wonderful under the sky. I’d swim a mile in a big empty lake…and then run 5K with lots of happy runners.

But of course that didn’t happen.

Couldn’t see myself cavorting on 9/11. And I couldn’t watch TV. So I spent the day thinking about my Mom (a life-long New Yorker)…and trying to make some beautiful photos. Just trying to make some beauty.  Add a bit of life to the world.

Trying to see  the blue sky as a fountain of strength and continuity…

Something that fills my soul–

…and not a highway of Death.

I worked many hours on my computer.  Think I made some beautiful pictures.  But I never left the house.

The sky is blue again today.  And today (9/12) I’ll swim and I’ll run.

See you on the road.

Canal Diggers 5K

Hosted by the Central Mass Striders, the Canal Diggers 5K in Worcester, MA is a road race that really treats you right.

Most races give you a cotton T-shirt; the Canal Diggers 5K gives you a technical running shirt that I think I will really run in.

Most road races have a sign to mark each mile; the Canal Diggers 5K has a big digital clock at each mile, to spur you on.

And of course most races have some post-race nourishment, often just bananas and water; but the Canal Diggers 5K has a great BBQ with burgers, chicken, pizza–and excellent Harpoon beer!

Could I ask for anything more in a road race?

Sure.  I could hope for a fast course.  And the Canal Diggers 5K delivers.  I know it must be fast because I ran a minute and a half faster than I have at any other 5K this year.

(P.S.  I ran barefoot, and found the asphalt very smooth underfoot, every step of the way.)

Come! Run with me now…

(I took this photo, and the others below, while running.)
