Great Bay Half Marathon

The Great Bay Half marathon is a big race (part of the Locorunning “Will Run for Beer” seeies), with runners flowing over the rolling hills of seacoast New Hampshire. Musicians and dancers along the way provide entertainment, and everyone has a great time.

I’ve got an injury, so I can’t run today…but I’ll bike the course, and you can run along with me!


They call themselves Nice & Naughty. (Hmmm… Which one’s naughty?)

Half at the Hamptons

The Half at the Hamptons in Hampton Beach, NH is the first half-marathon of the year around here. It features a flat course, 1200 happy runners…and hot soup and cold beer after the race. (Which we all expect, since this is part of the “Will run for Beer” race series. :)

I’m the Running Photographer, so of course I’ve got a camera with me. I’ll be taking pictures as I run. Come! Join me in the thick of the action at the Half at the Hamptons…


We’ve had cabin fever for weeks…


…so we explode from the starting line!

Pain is a privilege? I’m not so sure. But I’d rather be here than anywhere else.

White Mountain Milers (WMM) Half Marathon

Here are photos I took at the 2009 White Mountain Milers (WMM) Half Marathon in North Conway, NH.

Although it is in the White Mountains, the course is remarkably flat…and the foliage was beautiful (despite a deluge of Biblical proportions the day before).

After the race, we all enjoyed Very Fancy Pizza.  (It was so fancy they call it “Flatbread.”)

I ran with a camera, and took pictures as I ran. (Yes, I took photos as I ran. I didn’t stop or slow down. After all, I was in a race!) Swanzey Covered Bridges Half Marathon

The Swanzey Covered Bridges Half Marathon is aptly named, as the course takes runners through four covered bridges. It’s like running through a Currier and Ives print:

I have always been fond of this race, as it was the first Half I ever ran. (I ran it in 2005–the first year of the race.) But a couple of weeks before this race I hurt my foot(plantar fasciitis) so I could not run. Nevertheless, I came to cheer and take pictures. Great Bay Half Marathon

Early in February I suffered a back injury.   For more than a month, I could only take a step or two–then had to stop because of the pain.   It took a lo-o-ng time to hobble to the kitchen, or the bathroom.   I saw my phystical therapist two or three times a week…but other than that, I never set foot outside.
 
Three weeks ago I was finally able to walk…so I put on my running shoes and went outside.   Could I run?   I didn’t even try.   My physical therapist was very clear about that.   No running!   But he said an easy jog would be okay.
 
I managed a third of a mile.
 
(I know.   That’s not very far.   But for me it was fantastic!)
 
Over the last three weeks I built up my distance to six miles.   So today is a big test for me.   If I can run 13.1 miles and feel okay afterwards, then I will enter the Boston Marathon.   (I have a number for Boston…but Marathon Monday is just two weeks away. )   It’s a dumb, dumb idea…but I have the number.   Is it possible?
 
I’ll find out today.   If I can’t finish this Half, or if I’m limping afterwards, then Boston is out of the question.   But maybe I can reach the finish line…
 
So my goal today is not a particular time. I just want to finish, without limping.   I’m carrying a small camera, so you can join me as I try to run the 2009 Great Bay Half Marathon.
