On this first day of 2010, hundreds of runners celebrate by running in the inaugural Lowell 1st Run. There’s snow on the landscape but the weather is mild as we sprint into the new year.

Here are photos I took while running the Genesis Battlegreen Run in Lexington, MA. The course has one significant hill, but the grade was not daunting and the foliage was beautiful (despite a strong windstorm the day before).
The “Battlegreen Run” is two races: a 5K and a 10K. I ran the 5K with about 250 others…and an equal number ran the 10K. Both races took us past the “Birthplace of American Liberty”–
–where, just after dawn on April 19, 1775, a handful of Americans stood against an overwhelming number of British Regulars (the “Redcoats”) in the first armed resistance to the American Crown. This was The Shot Heard Round the World. Seven Americans died that morning, and a nation was born.
Our race was far less dramatic. Just a few hundred runners romping through a cool Fall day, and then enjoying the very fine post-race food provided by the race sponsors.
I ran with a camera, and took pictures as I ran. (Yes, I took photos as I ran. I didn’t stop or slow down. After all, I was in a race!) If you click on the “Play” button below, you can view my slideshow, and get a first-person experience of the
Here are photos I took while running the 2009 Gull 10K in Gloucester, MA.
The course is one of the most scenic of any race I have run…taking us out and back along the ocean, where almost every step gave us great views of incoming breakers and bright blue sky.
After the race we all enjoyed a great breakfast provided by the race organizers (eggs, bacon, sausage, bagels, juice, and coffee!)

The New Year starts with only one degree out there!
But that won’t keep Real runners indoors. So hundreds of us converge in Salisbury, MA for the Hangover Classic.
The Hangover Classic is a beloved New Year’s Day run in Salisbury Beach, MA. There’s a 5K and a 10K…and an optional “Plunge” for runners who want to jump into the ocean after crossing the finish line.
This year the weather is brutal–temps never climb above 13 degrees, and there is a relentless north wind that never drops below 30 mph. I carry a small camera and intend to take pictures while running, but my hands are so cold that I can’t operate the camera. So this blog entry and associated slideshow feature no pictures taken “on the run”…but plenty of pre-race and post-race photos.
Despite the arctic weather, this is a great race, and a great way to ring in the new year!
Many thanks to Locorunning and to the Winners Circle Running Club for putting on this great race.
